About this Course

Survey of Computer Information Systems (CIS105) is an exciting, fast-paced course that will teach you the basics of many forms of technology. Computers, computer software, technology management, computer safety, and learning the basics of Word Processing, Presentation Software, Spreadsheets, and Databasing are but a few of the topics you will become familiar with! There is hardly a career today that does not rely heavily on technology, and this is the place to begin learning how to recognize and familiarize yourself with the technology that interfaces with the world today.

In order to make your course experience a positive one, we will spend the first module getting acquainted with the Canvas environment and what is expected of you in this course to be successful. Use this as an opportunity to spend time learning about Canvas, meeting your classmates and familiarizing yourself with the course materials, expectations, requirements and college support services.

Why do I need this course?

In today's competitive job market, it is difficult to find a job that does not involve the extensive use of technology. To be able to compete effectively for a well-paying job, a knowledge of technology and basic computer operations is key. In this course you will learn enough about basic technology to be able to discuss how technology is created, used, and implemented in the workplace. You will also learn how to navigate your computer, and you will learn some of the more essential software programs.

Structure of Course

Although we are not tied down to specific times of day, we will adhere to a weekly schedule that includes readings, discussions, assignments, quizzes, etc. The course is broken up into 6 themed modules. Please check the CIS105 Pacing Guide in Module 1 for what is expected of you and when assignments are due.

After you review the Pacing Guide, carefully review each page within the module to assess the work required and dates due. Get started on the requirements for the week. Each weekly assignment will have assigned readings, notes from your instructor, and various activities that can include assignments, quizzes, and discussion boards. To navigate within a module, click on the Next button on the bottom of the page.

Budget your time wisely.

The biggest mistake that students make is waiting until the last minute to complete assignments. There is a class calendar (Pacing Guide) that lists the dates for all course activities, assignments, quizzes and tests. Also, Canvas has a "To-Do" area to remind you of upcoming assignments. Check the course and the "To-Do" list area everyday to stay on target.

Student Email & Canvas Inbox

Your instructor will send you communication in your Student Gmail Account or through the Canvas Inbox.

Student Email

Every student at MCC has a student email account assigned through Gmail (Google Mail). Your account is YOURMEID@maricopa.edu. In addition, you can receive messages in the Canvas Inbox. All of your Canvas messages will be sent initially to your Student Gmail Account. You can customize your Canvas Notification Settings to receive your messages to your preferred contact method (personal email, text message or social network). It is your responsibility to set up your email and notifications based on your preferences and check your messages EVERY DAY. Instructors will periodically send time-sensitive, important messages through either Canvas or Gmail. There is no excuse for missing these important messages.

Netiquette

Netiquette refers to the rules of behavior while on the Internet. When interacting within the online course environment, please follow these guidelines:

Show professionalism and courtesy in all communications within the course.
No one else should be given access to the course or conferences without the instructor's permission.
Do not use the words or text from others without acknowledging the source.
Humor can easily be misinterpreted within the online environment, please be cautious with the use of humor and use symbols to help prevent misunderstandings. :-) :-(
Adhere to the same behavioral standards as you would in a face to face classroom and as is specified in the student handbook.
Do not type in all capital letters, for those of us using the Internet frequently, this can seem like you are 'yelling'.
Respect other people's time and contribute thoughtful comments and ideas to the discussions rather than simply making statements such as 'I agree'. These will result in fewer points.
Use correct spelling and grammar. Avoid the use of abbreviations and use spell check within your word processor or within the course to check the spelling of your communications.

Disagreement within the classroom does not equal disrespect. You are encouraged to have different points of view, opinions, and values. However, it is required that students monitor their language within discussions. Racist, sexist, or homophobic language will not be tolerated. Consult the Student Handbook for college policies regarding these types of behavior.
